The Start of the One-Way

The story

From here the Park Loop Road runs one way. Parking is in the right-hand lane unless posted otherwise.

Say goodbye to oncoming traffic. From here the road runs one-way for about thirteen miles, by a decision made in nineteen sixty-nine. That gives you one freedom and one catch. You can stop in a lot of places, because you park in the right-hand lane unless a sign says otherwise. And you can't change your mind. If you drive past something you wanted, the only way back to it is all the way around, so decide early. Short on time? Give your stops to Sand Beach, Thunder Hole, Otter Point and Jordan Pond, and I'll warn you before each one. In July and August it's very crowded, most of the lots are full by nine in the morning, and people walk in the road. If a lot's full, keep going, use the right-hand lane where the signs allow, and walk back. In season the free Island Explorer bus runs this loop too, though it doesn't go up Cadillac. And if somebody promised you a moose, I'm sorry. Moose and bears are very rare here, and years can pass between confirmed moose sightings on this island.
