The South Country Light

The story

Notice the light out here, the way it lies long and gold across the desert when the sun gets low, picking out every ridge and ocotillo wand in sharp relief and throwing the washes into shadow. The desert keeps its best hours for the edges of the day, dawn and dusk, when the heat backs off and the whole south country goes soft and luminous and almost tender. Off to the west the Vallecito Mountains hold the last of it longest. You're deep in the quiet southern reach of the park now. Just road and scrub and sky, and the light doing what only desert light can.
