The Niagara Whirlpool & Aero Car

The story

The Niagara River does something here it does nowhere else: it stops charging forward and spins in place. Whirlpool State Park's level, railed rim path overlooks the famous basin where the gorge bends 90 degrees and the river wheels in slow circles above a pool roughly 125 feet deep. Across the gorge, the antique Whirlpool Aero Car — a 1916 cable car gliding on six steel cables between its Canadian terminals — drifts over the water on most summer days, the perfect moving centerpiece for photos. The best views are a short, level stroll south (left) from the free parking lot. With picnic tables, restrooms, and easy parking, it is an unhurried stop — and the mystery of why the river turns here at all comes with one of the tour's best stories.

The river below you isn't going anywhere. It's going in a circle. Walk left from the parking lot along the rim path — south, toward the far overlooks — and you'll get the full show. The rapids come thundering down the canyon, hit this spot, and the whole gorge snaps through a ninety-degree turn. The water can't make the corner, so it wheels instead: a vast pool, about a hundred and twenty-five feet deep, turning counter-clockwise in a slow, patient circle. Watch the lines of foam ride it around. Now lift your eyes across the gorge. That little antique cable car gliding out over the pool on six steel cables is the Whirlpool Aero Car, and it has been carrying passengers since nineteen sixteen. It was designed by a Spanish engineer, Leonardo Torres Quevedo, the same restless mind that built one of the world's first radio remote controls and a machine that played chess years before computers existed. His cableway runs seventeen hundred and seventy feet from one Canadian terminal to the other, and here's the part people love: the international border cuts right through the pool beneath it, so every round trip slips over that line four times — those passengers are drifting in and out of the United States right in front of you, twice each way, and nobody shows a passport. The car boards over there, on the Canadian side; we admire it from over here. Honestly, you may have the better seat — the whole pool, the whole turn, and that little machine drifting above it all. Which leaves the real question. Why would a river change direction that hard, out here, with solid rock on every side? The answer is buried under your feet — and that's all I'm going to say. Hold on about thirty seconds; Ranger Boone tells this one better than I ever could.
