The Greatest Ranch in Texas

The story

How Mission Espíritu Santo became the largest cattle ranch in Spanish Texas — and the Aranama people who worked it.

Walk the mission grounds and picture this not as a sleepy ruin but as a busy, working world. Mission Espíritu Santo was founded by Franciscan friars in seventeen twenty-two down near the coast, and moved here to the San Antonio River in seventeen forty-nine — and here it became something remarkable: the largest cattle ranch in all of Spanish Texas. At its height the mission ran tens of thousands of head of cattle and horses across this country. In a real way, the Texas cattle business — the whole cowboy story — has one of its taproots right here.

And it was built and worked by Native people — the Aranama and other peoples of this region, who came to live at the mission. Their lives here were complicated: the friars meant to convert and 'civilize' them, and much was lost — language, freedom, and to European disease, many lives. But they were also the herders and craftsmen and farmers who actually made this place run. When you look at these walls, remember they raised them. The stone granary and the church you see were rebuilt by the Civilian Conservation Corps in the nineteen thirties, on the old foundations, so you could stand where they stood.
