The Cross Dike and the Overlook

The story

The Cross Dike junction and its binocular overlook — the loop connection to the Wildlife Drive, and your turn-around decision point.

Just short of the end you'll reach a junction, where a short paved spur — the Cross Dike Trail — branches off to your right. It's worth the few steps: it runs out to a little observation deck with mounted spotting binoculars trained on the flats, and it connects across to the Wildlife Drive, so if you'd rather make a loop than a straight there-and-back, this is your chance to swing over to the road.

So here's your decision point. If you've had a full morning of it, this is a natural place to turn for home — you're just shy of two miles out, and turning here makes a fine walk of it. But if your legs are good and your water's holding, the true end of the dike is only a couple hundred yards further on, and it's a quiet, pretty spot worth finishing at. Take the overlook either way. Then choose your path.
