Signal Mountain rises by itself on the east side of the road, and a narrow, winding summit road climbs to overlooks of the Teton Range and Jackson Lake. Trailers and RVs are not allowed on it. Signal Mountain Lodge, with gas, food and a store in season, lies just up the main road.
You've heard about the signal fire. Here's the hill, Signal Mountain. The Summit Road leaves on your right in about a quarter mile, nearly five miles up, narrow and winding, no trailers or RVs. Allow thirty to sixty minutes, and turn right when you come back down, to go on north. It's the highest point you can drive to in the park. In the last glaciation, ice closed in around this mountain and left only the top few hundred feet showing, an island in the ice. Stay on this road, and the lodge is on your left in about a mile, with gas, food and restrooms in season. That's the last gas and the last food on this loop, twenty-five miles from here back to Moose, so top up.
