The story
The Northeast Entrance has long been the most used of the park's three staffed stations. Booths take credit or debit only, and visitors receive a park map and brochure on entry. The first overlook comes up almost at once, just past the station.
That's the last gate, and you're through it. Under an agreement from nineteen seventy-six, a share of the entrance money goes to the Oglala Sioux Tribe. The name on this country is a Lakota name, in translation. It stuck, and so did they.
