A sea stack below the road and an ancient sea cave high above it, left from when the ocean stood far higher.
Glance left, down through the trees. That's Monument Cove. You won't see much of it from the car, but from the Ocean Path you can look down at a sea stack, a column the waves cut loose from the cliff. The stones around it are cobbles, rolled smooth by the surf. People pocket them, and more and more are going missing, so leave them where they lie. Now look the other way, up at Gorham Mountain. There's a sea cave up there, at the Cadillac Cliffs, carved by waves more than twelve thousand years ago, when that spot was at sea level. The weight of the ice had pushed the land down, and as it melted, the ocean came in and turned these mountains into islands.
