Second navigational moment, and this one is easy to miss because the village is small and you are looking at the lake.
In Eagle Nest, State Road Thirty-Eight ends at US Highway Sixty-Four. **You want to turn RIGHT onto US Sixty-Four, signed for Angel Fire and Taos.**
If you turn LEFT instead you will head east toward Cimarron and the Cimarron Canyon — which is a gorgeous drive in its own right, and if you have a spare hour it is genuinely worth doing as an out-and-back. But it is not the circle, and it will take you away from us.
So: right onto Sixty-Four, toward Angel Fire.
This is also your last good fuel and food stop for a while. Eagle Nest has both, and Angel Fire is a resort — which means excellent restaurants at resort prices, some of which keep resort hours.
Once you are on Sixty-Four, you will run south down the Moreno Valley with the lake behind you and the Sangre de Cristo on your right — and about eight miles down, on the hillside to your right, you will see something white that I want you to be ready for.
Make the right turn onto Sixty-Four.
